A bold piece of modern ethnic jewelry featuring a large silver Yemen pendant with antique silver Yemeni beads and sterling silver chain.
The pendant amulet or Hirz is embellished with a large carnelian gemstone and the silver granulation that is so desired in Yemen jewelry. The pendant had only 5 of the original dangles so I added 2 antique filigree silver Yemeni drop beads; one embellished with a small carnelian bead.
Acting as connectors to the sterling silver chain are 2 exquisite antique Yemeni silver beads in a diamond shape. Approximately 80 years old, these special beads also have a tiny granulated floral motif in the centre.
Double strands of sterling silver rolo chain lead to antique carnelian beads, each embraced by vintage granulated spacer beads, also from Yemen. A sterling silver clasp and sterling silver extender chain. The extender is adorned with yet another carnelian with a silver filigree Yemeni bead. Adjust the length to suit - note the photos.
Even though this pendant is quite large, it is not at all heavy, and I've kept the design very simple to honour the beauty of this traditional pendant while giving it a modern sensibility.
Finished length: 26.5" + 3" extender chain (67.3 cm + 76mm extender) plus pendant
Pendant measures 5.25" high x 2 9/16" wide (130mm high x 67mm wide)
I've named this one of a kind necklace "Dhat-Badan" who was the nature goddess of ancient Yemen and Ethiopia. She was the goddess of the oasis and was worshipped at tree-circled pools throughout the region.
