One of a kind ethnic necklace featuring an antique silver Berber hamsa amulet pendant on a long length of gorgeous antique African resin amber beads.
With both translucent and opaque qualities, the golden yellow amber beads were traded throughout Africa as “Amber”, and were manufactured in Germany in the 1920s to 1930s and are referenced as Phonelic Amber. And note while they are not genuine amber, high quality Phenolic amber is currently almost as collectible as the real thing, which makes them a great investment.
With the distinctive andulasian rose motif, indicative of Essaouira silversmiths, the hamsa amulet also has a tiny hallmark on the back of the pendant.
Each of the yellow amber beads is embraced by an assortment of old Yemeni silver granulated spacers, old Moroccan mixed silver/alpaca bead caps as well as new sterling silver spacers and bead caps. And separating the beads are old Berber tribal silver rondelle beads.
A hand-made sterling silver clasp from Sri Lanka finishes this necklace.
Finished length is 28.5" (73cm) and the khamsa measures 3 1/8" h x 1 3/4" w (80mm h x 44mm w)
I've named this necklace "Mawu" for the Creator/Moon Goddess known among the people from the Dahomey region of West Africa - she is associated with the moon, night, fertility, motherhood, gentleness, forgiveness, rest and joy.
